YouScript Precision Prescribing: A Veteran’s Story

By June 9, 2016February 21st, 2021One Comment

Did you know the VA now covers Genelex testing for veterans? A recently approved contract is making pharmacogenetic testing accessible to clinicians in the Veterans Administration, so their patients can benefit from precision medicine immediately.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded Genelex a Federal Supply Schedule contract as a government supplier. The approval allows healthcare providers in the Department of Defense, Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and several other government agencies access to this technology to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient care and patient experiences with medications.

John Meyer, a veteran and chronic pain patient from Nebraska, shares his story:

How did you hear about YouScript?

I am a member of a private online support group for people diagnosed with Adhesive Arachnoiditis (AA).  AA is a rare painful disease that causes severe chronic nerve pain.  I first heard about genetic testing and your company through that site.

Why did you want to get tested?

Chronic nerve pain is very difficult to treat and all of us who suffer from it are constantly on the lookout for new possibilities for relief.  This testing offers the possibility of narrowing down what meds might be the most successful in treating nerve pain for any given individual.

Although John belongs to a small part of the population that doesn’t have any significant drug-gene interactions with his current drug regimen, we did find drug-drug interactions that were hindering his treatment. This isn’t uncommon for a patient seeing a handful of different providers and specialists.

What did you take away from your results?

Your testing identified one potentially serious interaction with the medications that I was taking, and made several suggestions for replacements. We learned of drug interactions and have taken corrective measures to remedy that. I feel your testing has great potential to help many people in need.

How was your experience with the YouScript staff?

My contact at Genelex was the epitome of a professional, in addition to being courteous and patient with me and all my questions. Your company have been nothing but professional and helpful to me, and I would have absolutely no problem recommending your services to anyone.  Thank you for all that you have done.

What would you say to other veterans and providers considering YouScript Precision Prescribing?

I can’t imagine why both patients and physicians wouldn’t be interested in your service.  The ability to target what medications will work best for you should save time, money, and promote a more efficient method of caring for patients.

I am very pleased that the VA has begun utilizing your services because our Veterans deserve nothing but the best in medical care.  It is my belief that your testing is an invaluable tool that will enable the VA to increase its efficiency and potential to save money in the process by targeting specific medications through your process.  Thank you all for your assistance in my treatment.

Respectfully,

John Meyer

I has the testing done by my Pain Doctor.
I found out that I was a Super Ultra Metabolizer, so I’m washing out certain meds very fast!
It has saved me the heartache of bleeding out from blood thinners also, I carried a marker that made me extremely sensitive to Warfarin, so after having many DVT’s, a Stroke and finally Pulmonary Embolisms, it was obviously not a good match for me; I’m on Eliquis and doing well.
Finding this information about myself has cleared the way for me to be treated with what I need not what the Insurance company will pay for!
I knew that being a natural Redhead with Blue eyes put me into a category that is rare, also we are difficult to sedate. I also am 0-, making my combination quite rare!
I know have a card to back up that long Allergy list.
I advise you to get this little swab test done ASAP!
I just wish as patients we had access to ad and remove information without charging us to use it.
Most of us over 55, are proactive with our own health. I’d like to know too before the Doctor makes a decision that might not do well with my other prescriptions.
Can you make a FREE APP for us to use?
    Thank You
